In Pennsylvania, every school district is required to have a Student Assistance Program (SAP) for identifying and assisting students who experience barriers to learning. The SAP team at Trinity High School consists of staff and community agency liaisons specifically committed to helping students. The SAP team can help you find services and assistance within the school and community. The SAP team can provide you with information to help you make the best choices to fit you and your child/family's needs and wishes. The SAP team does not diagnose, treat, or refer your child for treatment.
Anyone can refer a child to the Trinity High School SAP team. Some students are referred by teachers or other school personnel. A friend or family member, or the students themselves, can make a referral to the SAP team. The team will gather specific information regarding academic performance, attendance, and disciplinary records. If this information suggests that action is necessary, a team member will contact you regarding your child's referral to the program. Before your child is enrolled in the SAP program, a permission form needs to be signed. As a parent, your knowledge and thoughts about your child will be helpful in developing a plan of action. Participation is voluntary.
A SAP referral would be appropriate for a student who is:
- Experiencing a decline in academic performance
- No longer spending time with friends or family
- Not wanting to attend school
- Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or stressed
- Dealing with a breakup of a relationship
- Experiencing major changes in life
- Dealing with the illness or death of someone close
- Experimenting with of using alcohol or other drugs
If you have questions or feel that your child needs help, call Trinity High School at (724)225-5380, and ask to speak with your child's school counselor.
